The reality of Super Bowl weekend is that the media will erroneously continue to sensationalize this event’s effects on trafficking, and the truth about most victims will be left unknown. The truth is that the commercial sexual exploitation of our girls and young women is a problem that happens every day including the Super Bowl. Most of the victims will not be brought in from other states, and large number of them will be children and young adults who experienced childhood trauma and who the system failed to serve. Most of the victims will be low-income youth, youth of color, LGBT youth and will have experienced homelessness. Most of the buyers will not be from out of town; they’ll be locals of all ages, ethnicities and socio-economic background. Despite what the media coverage will have you believe, they won’t need to consume lots of alcohol or the excuse of an annual sporting event to purchase a young girl. This is the reality that the girls and young women who we serve are facing, and we urge our community to spread this message, raising awareness about what really happens and how you can truly help. Spending thousands where it is not needed only takes away from the ones who rely on services to effect change in their own lives. From every day toiletries to education to empowerment, leadership and employment programs, survivors need support. If you want to be a part of the solution, know that trafficking is not an isolated crisis: it doesn’t occur on just one day chosen by a sports league, it doesn’t occur in just one city, and there isn’t a chosen hero who can come in and save the day. To support survivors, we must create avenues for them to soar and succeed with financial independence and self-sufficiency. Ron Hampton-Ronald Hampton, is an emeriti faculty member of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He was the former Director of Executive Education and Chair of the Marketing Department at UNL. His specialty is international marketing and marketing leadership. Ron is an experienced researcher and has been published in various journals.His research has been investigating the extent of human trafficking in Ukraine and resulted in one of the first studies on the magnitude of the problem in the countries of Belarus, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. He most recently conducted similar research for the state of Nebraska and the Governor’s Task Force in fighting human trafficking.
